In this series we introduce well-known as well as little known orchestras from Europe andr those that played in Europe. All titles are also intended for DJ’s putting together tandas at a milonga.

The first album features the orchestras Quintin Verdu, Jose M. Lucchesi, Francisco Alongi and Rafael Canaro.

Quintin Verdu was born in Algeria to Spanish parents and came to Paris at the age of 10 where he attended the conservatory. At the age of 21 he met Rafael Canaro and Miguel Orlando, who hired him as a pianist. Until 1935 he toured Europe with Rafael Canaro and later accompanied Tino Rossi, whom he soon left to found his own orchestra.
Members were Marcel Feijoo, Louis Ferrari and Tito Fuggi for bandoneons and Tonin Troupel, F. and S. Helpert for violins, S. Fuggi, on bass; the singer was Roland Avellys and he himself on piano.
They were very successful with their unmistakable style until the outbreak of the war. During the war he was captured and released in 1941. Later his orchestra became the house band of the famous „Olympia“ in Paris. On this album are four titles which represent the unmistakable style of the orchestra.

José Marcos Lucchesi came to Paris from Brazil as the son of a Corsican family and, in accordance with the spirit of the times, he had also fallen for tango in the 1930s. As far as I know, he recorded the only tango of this time which was played on 2 pianos. This is the tango „Juventud“ by the composer Francisco Alongi. After the war he changed with his work into popular dance music.

Francisco Alongi came to France from Tunisia in 1921 and became the pianist of Manuel Pizarro and later Tano Genaro. He often accompanied the famous tango singer Rosita Barrios, who unfortunately left very few recordings. In 1925 he became the first pianist of the orchestra Bpianco-Bachicha and later with Eduardo Bianco and Bachicha-Ferrazzano. In 1932 he founded his own orchestra and we have here some pieces from that time with Luis Scalon as chorus singer. Who in turn was a link between almost all Argentinean orchestras touring Europe, as he recorded tangos with almost all of them.

Rafael Canaro, the little brother of the great Francisco, is also known as Argentina‘s tango ambassador in Europe. He was constantly on tour and played in almost all European metropolises in front of almost all influential people of that time. The recordings with Luis Scalon are all from the year 1938 in Paris, his main residence. Due to the outbreak of war Rafael Canaro returned to his home country Argentina.
